Pride Week: Caregiving in Queer Communities

As a friend, family member, or partner there can be complex challenges that come alongside caregiving in queer communities.

When care needs become more complex and you or a loved one may face the dilemma around ‘coming out’ to every new care provider. When there are uncertainties around discimination and access to care this can be a difficult decision. It is important to ensure that you, your loved ones, and your chosen family know your wishes will be honoured.

Sometimes, the role of a caregiver also becomes that of an advocate. Stepping up to ask questions around inclusive care, reaching out to other community members, and allowing space for difficult decisions around identity and belonging.

As part of a loved one’s family of choice, 2SLGBTQIA+ caregivers are entitled to supportive resources and services. This means creating grief spaces, support groups, and counseling that are understanding of the queer experience.

Whether you are at end of life or are caring for someone, no one should have to compromise who they are in order to have access to compassionate and inclusive care.
