As part of National Hospice Palliative Care Week, we want to acknowledge the contributions of caregivers supporting loved ones in palliative care.
Many Canadian become caregivers without knowing it when someone they love is dealing with a life-limiting illness. Even fewer of these caregivers seek out or know that there are resources and supports available to empower you through supporting yourself and your loved one as you face the illness journey together.
Caregivers are friends, family, or community members who provide care and support to individuals dealing with serious illnesses, regardless of prognosis. Palliative care can provide support for caregivers and families who are caring for a loved one, and – in the case of end-of-life palliative care – can also support those grieving or living with loss.
Planning for the unexpected can feel overwhelming, especially when you are juggling so many of life’s other responsibilities. Supports for caregivers are more than explaining and navigating the specifics of care, they also centre mental health and connection to community.
