Disability Pride Month is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible resilience and strength of people with disabilities.
By fostering a sense of community we can highlight the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in areas of society. This month-long commitment to listening and learning about the lived experiences of people with disabilities serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality.
Disability is an integral part of the human experience, it is a part of being human. At present, 16% of the world’s population experience some form of significant disability. According to the World Health Organization, that percentage is expected to go up as a result of an increase in noncommunicable diseases and people living longer.
Persons with disabilities are one of the world’s most diverse groups, transcending age, gender identity, race, and economic situations. However, they are more likely to die earlier, have poorer health and experience limitations in everyday functioning. These barriers exist due to continued health inequities and continued stigma.
This Disability Pride Month, we are striving to create a more equitable and accessible society.
