National Day of Mourning

Today is National Day of Mourning in Canada.

The day honours the memory of lives lost or those who were injured due to a workplace tragedy.

Today our Compassionate City collectively renews our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace and to preventing further injuries, illnesses, and deaths.

The first Day of Mourning was recognized by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984. The day became a notional observance when the Workers Mourning Day Act was passed in 1991 and the federal government proclaimed April 28 the national Day of Mourning.

In 2024, 146 workers in British Columbia died from a workplace injury or disease. There were 28 fatalities due to traumatic injury and 78 fatalities due to occupational disease.

Observance of Day of Mourning can happen at work, at home, or surrounded by community. We grieve together those whose lives were forever changed by a workplace tragedy.

Remembrance will be held today, presented by the city of New Westminster and New Westminster & District Labour Council.

  • Time: 11:00 AM
  • Location: Westminster Pier Park

Every year workers, families, employers, and community members come together to renew our commitment to creating safer workplaces.
